As Managing Director of Federal Relations, Alana Petersen leads Lockridge Grindal Nauen’s Federal Relations team in Washington, D.C. In this role she brings over 25 years of policy and political experience at the federal level in both chambers.

Prior to joining the firm in 2019, Ms. Petersen was Campaign Manager for Senator Smith’s successful 2018 campaign and served as Deputy Chief of Staff for both U.S. Senators Tina Smith and Al Franken. She has also advised numerous statewide campaigns in Minnesota including Secretary Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign and Senator Franken’s 2014 re-election campaign.

Born and raised in Minnesota, Ms. Petersen graduated from the University of Minnesota, Morris in 1991 and moved to Washington, D.C. to work on Capitol Hill for Minnesota Congressman David Minge. In 1998, she returned to Minnesota to run his re-election campaign. She followed this by a U.S. Senate campaign in election cycle of 2000 and a congressional recount in the fall of 2000.

To broaden her political experience, Ms. Petersen served as Executive Director of a statewide non-profit organization, Target Market. With an annual budget of $6 million dollars, Target Market promoted an anti-tobacco message to high school students. In 2002, Ms. Petersen began consulting for a national political consulting firm, Grassroots Solutions. There, she worked with national labor unions, congressional candidates, and the pro-choice community to develop plans for the 2004 election cycle.

After having her first son, Alana took a job closer to home in northern Minnesota. She worked for Minnesota Congressman, Jim Oberstar, and ran his congressional re-election campaign in 2006, and later joined Al Franken’s U.S. Senate campaign in September of 2008. After the election, Alana served as a Director for the 2008 statewide hand recount. In July of 2009, she joined Senator Franken’s staff as the State Director. In the 2010 election cycle, she was asked to serve as Field Director for Mark Dayton’s recount for Governor.

In her personal time Alana is committed mentoring people beginning to engage in the political process. Alana currently is the Chair of Women Winning, a non-profit organization focused on recruiting, training, endorsing, and electing pro-choice women to all levels of government. She also is the Chair of East Central Regional Arts Council, one of 11 regional Arts organizations that delivers programs and grants to local artists. Alana is a member of Minnesota Farmers Union and serves as treasurer for the organization in Pine County. She is also pursuing her Masters degree in Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs.

Alana and her husband Thom reside in Pine City, Minnesota with their two sons Dylan (12) and Waylon (11). Thom currently is serving as Commissioner of Agriculture for the State of Minnesota. During their free time, the Petersen’s play and watch a lot of baseball, and raise and show miniature horses at county fairs across the state and in the Minnesota State Fair. The family also belongs to Pine County 4-H.
