LGN lawyers David Asp, Simeon Morbey and Elizabeth Odette serve as mentors to students at the University of St. Thomas School of Law through the school’s Mentor Externship Program. The program connects students with a legal professional working in the student’s area of interest to help them gain work experience, develop relationships and navigate the legal field. On November 7, 2019, partner Elizabeth Odette moderated a “Law Student Writing Workshop” at the University of St. Thomas School of Law. 37 students attended a panel discussion and then broke out to work one-on-one with an equal number of volunteer attorneys on a writing problem or their own writing samples. Both students and volunteers remarked that this was an invaluable program to assist the students hone their legal writing skills while positively interacting with local practitioners in the area.
The Minnesota State Bar Association (MSBA) has recognized Stephanie Chen, Arielle Wagner, Kate Baxter-Kauf, Rachel Kitze Collins, Elizabeth Odette (not pictured) as North Star Lawyers for their pro bono work.
North Star Lawyers are MSBA members who have provided 50 hours or more of pro bono service to low-income individuals or organizations that serve economically disadvantaged individuals during the 2018 calendar year. LGN Partner Elizabeth Odette participated in a panel as part of the American Bar Association’s Joint Conduct 101 series which aims to introduce more junior lawyers to key concepts in the joint conduct space. Elizabeth Odette led the Rule of Reason portion of the panel, which also focused on Quick look and Truncated analysis.
Ms. Odette focuses her practice on antitrust, product liability, consumer, and class action litigation. She has particular experience in antitrust discovery disputes, third party discovery, expert issues, trial management, and evidentiary issues.
LGN Partner Elizabeth Odette spent an hour as part of the Minneapolis Downtown Kiwanis club ringing bells to collect donations for the Salvation Army. Paralegal Erika Hernandez also spend an hour bell ringing with her daughter’s Girl Scout Troop.

LGN partner Brian Clark also presented on drafting a complaint and case development as part of the webinar, which focused on what it is like to represent Plaintiffs in antitrust litigation. North Star Lawyers are MSBA members who have provided 50 hours or more of pro bono service to low-income individuals or organizations that serve economically disadvantaged individuals during the 2017 calendar year. In 2017, over 928 MSBA members provided over 106,400 total hours of pro bono service – an estimated value of $21,300,000 in free legal advice.
During the school year, nine LGN attorneys have served as Reader mentors to 7th and 8th Grade Student Writers at Folwell Performing Arts Magnet School in Minneapolis. Each week students wrote essays on assigned topics which were mailed to mentors to read and provide feedback. Having a specific dedicated audience for their writing proved invaluable in motivating the students to work on and improve their writing. Students, teachers, mentors, and program coordinators gathered to meet and celebrate the program’s school year success. For over 40%, English is not their primary language. Approximately 90% of the student population has diverse ethnic backgrounds. LGN Partner Heidi Silton will serve on the Reader/Writer Board beginning Fall of 2018. LGN Attorneys Elizabeth Odette, Kate Baxter-Kauf, Rachel Kitze Collins, Kristen Marttila, and Arielle Wagner attended the FBA Minnesota Chapter Federal Judges’ Dinner Dance. At the event the Chapter recognized the work on diversity and inclusion undertaken by members and leaders of Minnesota affinity bar organizations.
Ms. Marttila was recently elected as the National Council Delegate for the Minnesota Chapter of the FBA and will serve a three-year term as a Director. Ms. Odette was re-elected as co-chair of the Mass Tort, Multi-District Litigation, and Class Action Practice Group for the 2018-2019 term and Ms. Wells serves on the Communications Committee. Ms. Wagner is a member of the Board of the Minnesota American Indian Bar Association. Ms. Kitze Collins was recently elected as the treasurer for the MSBA Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy law section.
LGN partner Elizabeth Odette was recently featured in Hennepin Lawyer. Ms. Odette contributed to an article that advised attorneys on practicing law in dynamic times. The article, “Thriving in a Time of Change: Four Members, Four Perspectives” appears in the January/February 2018 issue of the publication.

The Minnesota State Bar Association recognizes members who provide 50 hours or more of pro bono legal services per year as North Star Lawyers.
Elizabeth Odette worked with the Children’s Law Center representing youth in foster care. Kate Baxter-Kauf represented indigent criminal defendants through the MSBA Appellate Practice Section’s Public Defender Appellate Pro Bono Program. Through the Volunteer Lawyers Network, Kristen Marttila represented a client seeking expungement of a criminal record, and both Kristen and Rachel Kitze Collins represented Wilderness Watch, a national wilderness-protection group, in a Boundary Waters case.

Elizabeth Odette elected co-chair of Federal Bar Association, Minnesota Chapter, Practice Group Committee
On May 17, 2017, Elizabeth Odette was elected by the members of the Minnesota Chapter of the Federal Bar Association to serve as a co-chair of the Mass Tort, Multi-District Litigation, and Class Action Practice Group Committee for a one year term beginning August 1, 2017. She will continue to also serve as a member of the MN FBA Diversity Committee.
