Five LGN Attorneys named North Star Lawyers for Pro Bono Work

The Minnesota State Bar Association (MSBA) has recognized Stephanie Chen, Arielle Wagner, Kate Baxter-Kauf, Rachel Kitze Collins, Elizabeth Odette (not pictured) as North Star Lawyers for their pro bono work.

North Star Lawyers are MSBA members who have provided 50 hours or more of pro bono service to low-income individuals or organizations that serve economically disadvantaged individuals during the 2018 calendar year. Over 930 North Star Lawyers provided over 110,500 total hours of pro bono service with an estimated value of $27.6 million in free legal advice. Download the list of North Star Lawyers for 2018.

13 LGN Attorneys recognized as Super Lawyers and Rising Stars, including four of the state’s Top 100 MN Super Lawyers and four of the Top 50 MN Women Super Lawyers

Lockridge Grindal Nauen is proud to announce that thirteen of the firm’s attorneys were selected as 2019 Minnesota Super Lawyers and Rising Stars.

A special congratulations to LGN partners Charles Nauen, Susan Ellingstad, Yvonne Flaherty, and Karen Hanson Riebel who were named as four of Minnesota’s Top 100 Super Lawyers. This is the seventh year in a row that Charles Nauen has been named as a Top 100 Minnesota Super Lawyer.

Susan Ellingstad, Yvonne Flaherty, Karen Hanson Riebel, and Heidi Silton were named as four of the Top 50 Women Super Lawyers in Minnesota for the second year in a row. We are proud that this is the fifth year in a row in which at least three of LGN’s women partners have been recognized in this category.

LGN supports MN Urban Debate League Mayors’ Challenge

LGN was proud to sponsor the Minnesota Urban Debate League’s Mayors’ Challenge Tournament on June 4, 2019. The event featured Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, Saint Paul Mayor Melvin Carter, the other guest judges who oversaw this year’s debate, and this year’s Champion of Change honoree, Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan.

LGN Partner Gregg Fishbein and Associate Kate Baxter-Kauf both serve on the Minnesota Urban Debate League’s Advisory Board. The MNUDL is a program of Augsburg University which provides resources and programming to support competitive academic debate in Twin Cities high schools and middle schools. The mission of MNUDL is to empower students through competitive academic debate to become engaged learners, critical thinkers, and active global citizens who are effective advocates for themselves and their communities. Currently, MNUDL serves more than 1000 students at 39 partner schools and has seen sustained growth in student participation since its inception in 2004.

LGNers help judge MN Urban Debate League Championship

LGN Attorneys and Law Clerks volunteered as judges at the Minnesota Urban Debate League’s All-Conference Championship for the MNUDL’s Middle School Program Northeast Conference on March 20, 2019. The tournament was the end of the season championship for middle school debaters from Battle Creek Middle School, Hazel Park Middle School, Capitol Hill Gifted and Talented Magnet, Ramsey Middle School, Murray Middle School, and Laura Jeffrey Academy.

LGN Associates support Legal Aid

LGN Associates participated in the 2018-2019 Legal Aid Associates’ Campaign annual fundraising drive as part in the firm’s 40440 service campaign.  The campaign, which ran from December 17, 2018, to January 31, 2019, and is an integral source of funding for Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid.

LGN Associate Kate Baxter-Kauf, who has led the campaign for the past several years, serves as both the firm captain and also as a Campaign Co-Chair, helping to facilitate the drive at law firms around Minnesota.  For the last two years, LGN Associates have had 100% participation in the drive and hope to achieve the same this year.

For 100 years, Legal Aid has worked in pursuit of helping Minnesota’s most vulnerable citizens gain access to their basic rights for safety, shelter, food, health care and education.  Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid provides legal services in 20 counties in Minnesota from offices in Minneapolis, St. Cloud and Willmar, and serves people with disabilities statewide.

Kate Baxter-Kauf named a Top Attorney Under 40 by Law360

Congratulations to LGN attorney Kate Baxter-Kauf on being named a Top Lawyer Under 40 by Law360. Kate was selected for her work in the Cybersecurity & Privacy area, and was the only Minnesota attorney named of the 168 lawyers recognized.

Kate has been extensively involved in the emerging area of data breach litigation, representing financial institutions and consumers in complex litigation arising out of medical and retailer data breaches across the country. She has been especially active in helping plaintiffs prepare and prove their cases, and in litigating privilege and standing issues. She also practices in the firm’s antitrust law, business litigation, and securities litigation practice groups.

Law360’s Rising Stars for 2018 is the list of 168 attorneys under 40 whose legal accomplishments transcend their age. The list of 168 was narrowed down from over 1,200, and winners were selected based on their career accomplishments in their selective disciplines.

North Star Lawyers are MSBA members who have provided 50 hours or more of pro bono service to low-income individuals or organizations that serve economically disadvantaged individuals during the 2017 calendar year. In 2017, over 928 MSBA members provided over 106,400 total hours of pro bono service – an estimated value of $21,300,000 in free legal advice.

LGN Associate Kate Baxter-Kauf was recognized at the 37th Annual Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid Law Day Dinner for her efforts surrounding the One Hour of Sharing Associates’ Campaign. Thanks to Kate’s efforts, LGN was one of the few law firms with 100% Associate participation in the Campaign.

LGN Attorneys Leading the Bar

LGN Attorneys Elizabeth Odette, Kate Baxter-Kauf, Rachel Kitze Collins, Kristen Marttila, and Arielle Wagner attended the FBA Minnesota Chapter Federal Judges’ Dinner Dance. At the event the Chapter recognized the work on diversity and inclusion undertaken by members and leaders of Minnesota affinity bar organizations.

Ms. Marttila was recently elected as the National Council Delegate for the Minnesota Chapter of the FBA and will serve a three-year term as a Director. Ms. Odette was re-elected as co-chair of the Mass Tort, Multi-District Litigation, and Class Action Practice Group for the 2018-2019 term and Ms. Wells serves on the Communications Committee. Ms. Wagner is a member of the Board of the Minnesota American Indian Bar Association. Ms. Kitze Collins was recently elected as the treasurer for the MSBA Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy law section.

Minnesota Supreme Court agrees with LGN, shareholders in Medtronic-Covidien tax inversion lawsuit

The Minnesota Supreme Court unanimously decided Wednesday that shareholders challenging the Medtronic-Covidien tax inversion could assert direct claims against Medtronic. Vern Vander Weide and Gregg Fishbein, along with Richard Lockridge and Kate Baxter-Kauf, represent the shareholders who are alleging that the inversion caused them to incur significant capital gains taxes and diluted their corporate ownership. The case will now go back to the Hennepin County District Court for further pre-trial proceedings.

The Minnesota State Bar Association recognizes members who provide 50 hours or more of pro bono legal services per year as North Star Lawyers.

The Minnesota State Bar Association has recognized LGN attorneys Elizabeth OdetteRachel Kitze CollinsKate Baxter-Kauf, and Kristen Marttila as North Star Lawyers.

Elizabeth Odette worked with the Children’s Law Center representing youth in foster care. Kate Baxter-Kauf represented indigent criminal defendants through the MSBA Appellate Practice Section’s Public Defender Appellate Pro Bono Program. Through the Volunteer Lawyers Network, Kristen Marttila represented a client seeking expungement of a criminal record, and both Kristen and Rachel Kitze Collins represented Wilderness Watch, a national wilderness-protection group, in a Boundary Waters case.

The list of these lawyers was printed in a full page advertisement in the Star Tribune last week.

LGN Associates Support Legal Aid

LGN associates were proud to have attained 100% participation in support of the Legal Aid One Hour of Sharing Campaign. Started in 2003 by a group of associates in Hennepin County, the One Hour of Sharing Campaign funds 1.5 FT attorneys that help people gain access to representation in housing court, domestic violence cases, immigration help and more. LGN worked with associates across the Twin Cities, and together they exceeded their funding goal and raised $96,700 in December 2016 and January 2017. Associates Kate Baxter-Kauf and Scott Moriarity chaired LGN’s effort, and the firm will be recognized at the Annual Law Day Dinner along with other firms achieving 100% participation.
